Hello let me introduce myself,

My name is Carol Vonesh and I am co-founder, along with co-founder, Karla Voorhees, of the
Ovarian Cancer Support Group of Polk Fl. Inc. We are planning a Community
Awareness Event for ovarian cancer at Munn Park on Saturday, September 9 th, from 3:00 7:00
pm. With your help, we would love to have as much downtown business, and Downtown
Development Authority participation as possible.

For those of you who are not familiar with our organization, let me tell you a little about us. We are a
small not- for- profit support and advocacy group based out of Lakeland, and have been in existence
for 2 1/2 years. We are all volunteer ovarian cancer survivors, caregivers or family members. Our
mission is to provide support, education and empowerment for women with ovarian cancer and other
gynecological cancers, promote awareness and information of these diseases for the women in our
community. In addition, we have recently set up a program to help women with ovarian cancer on
chemotherapy who is financially struggling due to the high costs of their medical needs.

We have group meetings once a month, as well as monthly dinners, and several group events and
parties during the year. In addition, we also hold awareness events at various locations for the public.
We have one large fundraiser early in the New Year (Mad Hatter Tea Party) and one large
awareness event in September (Community Awareness Event). The rest of the year Karla and I
speak to the public about ovarian cancer awareness. We depend on funds to cover our expenses
through donations or sponsorship. As you can see we are very busy for a small group.

We have a Facebook page at: Facebook/Ovarian Cancer Support Group of Polk Fl.

Last year, we had approximately 200 people attend our event held at the Masonic Lodge. We hope
that by having it at Munn Park this year, we will draw a larger crowd. Again, our Event will be from
3:00 pm to 7:00 Pm (setup 2:30). We are not closing down any streets. We have some vendors (so
far 12) and a few food vendors, but we would love to have more. If any of you would like to act as a
vendor for your business, we would love to have you. There is no charge for vendors or the public,
Donations are always welcome, but not required. We will also have music, hopefully some local
dancers, entertainment, and we are working on a few other things. Mayor Wiggs will read a
Proclamation at our event, as well.

Ovarian cancer is a very deadly disease ranking #1 among all gynecological cancers, and the 5 th
leading cause of deaths among women. According to the ACS, a woman is diagnosed with ovarian
cancer every 72 minutes. There are no diagnostic tools to detect ovarian cancer until it’s in the later
stages with only a 45 % five year survival rate. Early detection raises those odds to 93% five year
survival rate. This is why our group is so dedicated to raising early awareness in hopes to save lives.

With your consents, we would like to put a teal ribbon on a window or door of your business, and a
flyer about the event. We would like for you to display as much teal as possible. Teal is the universal
awareness color of ovarian cancer and other gynecological colors. Anything more you would like to
do would be welcome. Teal ribbons on the lamp post would be wonderful for the month of September.

If there are any other questions, concerns, or information you need, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Thank you so much for working with us to make this our biggest and best event this year.
